Second is to watch the high-calorie foods in the cafeteria and keep the late-night study-munching to a minimum. Calories add up quick and add some stress, before you know it you've put on a few pounds. Exercise is an excellent way to manage stress, burn calories, and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Find friends who share your love of health and fitness and get out and get active every chance you have. Take short study breaks in the library to go up and down the stairs a few times or walk the perimeter of the building. Getting the blood flowing will keep you awake and keep your mind sharp!

Also, cook dinner with friends at home; it's fun and healthier. Plus, you'll start to develop good habits for when you are working full time after graduation.

No matter how busy you are, always find time for breakfast - look for all-natural whole grain nutrition bars if you're in a frantic "I just rolled out of bed" rush, or microwave instant oatmeal and top with banana slices and peanut butter! During study sessions, take random walk breaks to revive your concentration as opposed to grabbing a sugary, empty-caloric snack. When you're in the cafeteria, fill your plate with veggies, protein, and a serving of whole grains. There's always time for exercise; get moving, even if it's in random bouts throughout the day - 15 minutes is better than 0.

But in the same turn, being in a college environment won't always allow for that so you have to embrace flexibility as well. Don't be too hard on yourself and know that you can always get back on track! And finally, HAVE SOME FUN! College is your last chance to explore and discover before being thrust into the real world. Plus, having fun is a great stress reliever and is needed to make sure you don't get overwhelmed.

Find an accountability partner and come up with a feasible goal-- go to the gym twice a week and run sprints at the track once a week. Planning ahead should extend to their food choices as well, as dining hall and eating out choices can be tempting and unhealthy. Plan dining hall meals with a balance of proteins and complex carbs, and look ahead at the menu if there are plans to go out to eat. That will reduce temptation.

Honest. Actually, weigh (PUN!) too honest for my own good. And funny (but don’t just go off that last excellent pun). I write about my struggle with weight loss and how I believe one loses weight in the kitchen, and gets fit in the gym. I am a Canadian in Melbourne who somehow ran three full marathons (training for a fourth!), hiked to Base Camp at Mt. Everest, and is pretty obsessed with CrossFit, cheese, travel, and keeping the chub-rub at bay.

I gained 15 pounds during college. Fine! I gained 25. Happy now? It’s a hard juggle, the whole being-healthy-fit-and-awesome thing to the whole drinking-every-night-eating-delicious-food-all-the-time-and-still-being-awesome thing. It’s hard. But doable. I know this because when I look back on it now, PLENTY of people did it. I saw people choosing the salads when I got fries, and heading to the gym when I was taking a “study” nap. It'll be thousands of tiny, good, better, right decisions that will add up to maintain or decrease your waistline. It'll be hard and annoying at times, but it'll also be worth it when you don't have a spare tire in the end.

The best thing to do is put your workouts in your schedule, just like you do with your classes. Find a buddy who is also commited to staying fit, but remember that if they feel like skipping a workout to go to the bar that doesn't mean you have to join them. I also recommend that college students find a few healthy things they like at the cafeteria and stick to those most of the time. Avoid searching around the cafeteria and taking a little of this and a little of that. Decide what you'll eat ahead of time and stick to it (okay, at least 90% of the time).

Motivation lulls happen to everyone, but the key is to remind yourself in those times how much better you feel about yourself when you get that run or workout done...even if you have to force yourself into those first steps, eventually the endorphins take over and you're always thankful you put in the sweat session. There are SO many opportunities to get physically active and most of them don't require any money; the college rec center, walking to and from class, taking the stairs up to your dorm, etc. I would also encourage those students on campus to start their meal with a BIG green salad. Most cafeterias have an excellent salad bar and starting with a salad will hopefully curb your appetite enough that the tempting dessert bar won't call your name as loud!

Missing a party during the season was never a sacrifice for me, per say, because there was something else I wanted more, but giving up a spot on the travel squad because I wasn't getting enough sleep? That's a pretty big sacrifice to make.

College is a great time to start habits to last a lifetime.  Walk or bike to class.  De-stress before (or after!) a big exam with some exercise.  Join the campus fitness center, it's probably an excellent facility, and either free or way less expensive than anything off campus!  Enjoy the outdoors.

First, you have to find a form of exercise that is easy to maintain with a busy schedule. Maybe you can bike to class or bring your workout clothes with you so you can jog from school to work. Make it part of your lifestyle. Second, recruit a friend. Friends help us stay committed to a plan even when we're not feeling it. Third, drink lots of water. It will help to lessen junk food cravings and you'll stay plenty hydrated for your workouts.

I think the two most important and realistic tips I could offer would be 1) learn to cook a few fresh meals and eat healthily (possible even on a student budget!) and 2) be active and try to spend time outdoors every day, whether it's walking around campus on a study break, biking to yoga class, or studying in the park.

When nutrition is in check; finding the inner child is the most motivating way to enjoy exercise and fitness. Finding an activity that is enjoyable will make getting fit fun.
