What is your best piece of advice for college freshmen? For many college freshmen moving into the dorm each Fall, it is their first true taste of independence, and with added freedom comes additional responsibility. My best advice for college freshmen is to find balance among the three S's of student life - Sleep, Study & Socialize. Without parents monitoring your schedule, it can be easy to neglect the importance of adequate sleep and a well balanced diet. Although the "Freshman 15" has gained mythic status, it is a pitfall of college life that can be avoided, especially as more college campuses recognize the importance of proper nutrition and offer greater choices within their meal plans. While it is important to live in the moment and experience all that college has to offer, it is also a good idea to step back and maintain proper perspective between the opportunity to study and the chance to socialize. Depending on your personality, you may find yourself spending all day studying in order to keep your GPA as high as possible, or you may discover that there is always something interesting happening on campus and homework takes a backseat. Finding that balance will be up to each individual student, and it won't be the same for everyone, but the goal upon graduation should be to minimize the number of regrets you will have in the future. When you graduate, hopefully you will leave with lifelong friends and a depth of knowledge in your field. Remember - everyone starts college as a freshman, and it can be overwhelming at times, but if you keep everything in perspective and remain confident in your decisions, you can enjoy your Freshman Experience and help pave the way for a successful road ahead.
