NYC Type

NYC Type is a collection of photographs I take while walking around the wonderfully colorful streets of New York. I photograph interesting typography from neighborhoods across all five boroughs. The photographs are taken using my Nikon D700 and 50mm Nikkor 1.4.

What is your greatest advice for aspiring digital designers?
Don't limit your creativity or your entrepreneurial spirit. Business and creativity are coming together like never before, so the opportunities to make a career out of doing what you love are better than ever. Also, don't be afraid to explore areas of design where you might not be totally comfortable, for example digital/web design. It's a bit intimidating at first, but the payoff can be huge.

Lori Weitzel

This blog serves as a practice ground for my career transition from graphic design to illustration and hand-lettering. I took on a project to create one illustration each day during the year 2011. The daily format was the same, I used inspiration boards to visually journal what I was working on or thinking about. The idea was for the viewer to look at the picture first and guess my thoughts. I wrote a small blurb after most illustrations explaining the inspiration. My illustration artwork and lettering were merged with others pictures to create a final color palette at the bottom. Currently posts are of new artwork I create, but they are not in the same format, to keep the 365 project recognizable. Please follow me on pinterest to see my inspirations.

The Design Blog

This is not just another design blog with random inspirational posts. The Design Blog cares about young designers from all over the world and this blog is the place where their work can be seen and recognized. This blog is all about great ideas, design, and creativity, and everyone's invited to be a part of it.

What is your greatest advice for aspiring digital designers?
The greatest advice that I can give is to work hard and never stop yourself from experimenting with new things. The best way to learn something new in this field is to try and work on something that you've never done before. When you create something, share it with everyone because that way you'll get a response on whether it's good or bad and what do you need to do better. "Don't hide your great ideas, share them." is a TDB motto, you should follow it!

Focus on constantly improving your work abilities and your work rather than comparing yourself to other designers. It’s so easy to find the work of the world’s best designers through gallery sites and blogs, and it’s easy to get discouraged if your work isn’t as good as the best of the best. Try to focus on your own education and experience. Keep moving forward and you’ll be on the right path.

Ambrose Little: Software Designer. Developer. Architect.

This is a professional software maker's blog, offering up various and sundry opinions, rants, and hopefully helpful thoughts on making great software for people. My background is in both development (programming/technical design) and interaction design/UX, so anything along those lines is fair game to appear as a post.

What is your greatest advice for aspiring digital designers?
My advice would be to not pigeonhole yourself as just a graphic, web, motion, or type designer. If your goal is to contribute to the design of great software, you need to get familiar with all the many broad aspects of software design that contribute to facilitating great experiences for people. You need a specialty, but keep your horizons broader than that specialty. "UX" in particular is and has been hot for several years, so if you want to really be marketable out of school, take time to learn and practice that, in addition to your specialty. A good interaction designer with, for instance, great visual design skills is highly valuable and those skill sets are very complementary in software. Click here to read Ambrose Little's thoughts on the specific question of whether a designer needs to code or not.

It's a great source of inspiration when needed. I remember this quote as well, “The computer has played a role in destroying creativity with Photoshop. Everybody thinks they’re a designer."

ThinkDesign Blog

ThinkDesign Blog, a product of Think Four Graphic Design, offers free design resources (textures, brushes, icons, vectors, etc), inspiration, and more.

What is your greatest advice for aspiring digital designers?
My best piece of advice for aspiring designers is to get active in the design community, and take in as much design inspiration as possible. The reason you got into this profession was for your love of quality design, so surround yourself with as much of it as you can, and learn from it. Also, practice, practice, practice. If the projects you're doing at work don't keep you motivated, create some personal projects just for practice. Just keep designing.

This is also very important for beginners to keep in mind: “What nobody tells people who are beginners — and I really wish someone had told this to me — is that all of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap; for the first couple years you make stuff, and it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase. They quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know it’s normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.”
- Ira Glass

UK Logo Design

This blog was built as a portfolio of my work over the years I spent freelancing. I used Wordpress, as it was an easy way to add work if I started freelancing again. It's also a robust solution if I wanted to start blogging along side my portfolio.

What is your greatest advice for aspiring digital designers?
Work experience can be everything. Doing an internship will open your eyes to a whole host of issues designers face on a day to day basis. Wokring with other designers is a great way to expand your skillset and view solutions in another way. Only show your best work in your portfolio, nothing you don't like yourself. It's best to be an expert in a certain area than try and dabble half-heartedly in many different areas. Remeber design is about problem solving, and, first and foremost, the ability to comunicate with all types of people in many different ways.
