Feeling a little low on creativity? A study recently published in PLOS One, a peer reviewed, open access journal, suggests that taking a hike may be the solution. The findings, entitled “Creativity in the Wild: Improving Creative Reasoning through Immersion in Natural Settings“, argue that a vacation from technology in nature can improve “higher order cognitive functions including selective attention, problem solving, inhibition, and multi-tasking.”
In the study, participants performed 50% better on creative problem solving tasks after four days of immersing themselves in nature. So next time you’re facing a mental road block, ditch the iPad and smart phone, pack a bag, and get stepping into the wilderness. Your brain will thank you!
