This is a blog in which various aspects of job search and career workplace issues are discussed. Because there is always something to be learned from others who are looking for work or who are struggling to succeed on the job, this blog draws on questions, comments, or problems of my career clients. Students need to be reminded that they have relevant experience (clubs, classes, sports, volunteer work, or religious activity) which can produce stories and skills worthy of inclusion on a resume or discussion in an interview. Because many of my clients are in creative fields (or would like to be), I include book reviews and stories of artists who have triumphed over daunting obstacles. The comments of readers are always responded to within a day or two.
What is the best piece of advice you have for job seekers? When you find what you care about and you have some supporting skills and/or education, you'll naturally want to do your best work. What is the best piece of advice you have for job seekers? Before you do anything in your job search, create your personal brand. This can be as simple as writing down your top 3 to 5 strengths and identifying a word that ties them altogether. Then write a supporting pitch that elaborates on your brand using the 3 to 5 strengths you identified. By doing so this, you now have a very powerful and memorable communication tool that you can use in your online profiles, your resume, your cover letter, your email signatures and in your interviews as the answer to questions like, "Why should we pick you?"
